The poem "Sadiq" by Brian Turner and the story "AnotherWay to Die" by Murakami Haruki both connect with the theme of loss of in war. "Sadiq" is trying to make a point about no matter the circumstances it should always hurt your heart to kill. It hurts because it is not right. The author’s word choice in “Sadiq” reflects the topic of loss in war. Thus, “No matter what adrenaline feeds the muscle its courage, no matter what god shines down on you, no matter what crackling pain and anger you carry in your fists”(Turner, 4/5/6/7). The continuous use of the words “no matter what” depicts and emphasizes the idea that under any circumstance war and killing is not humane. Although our soldiers are here to fight and protect us, so much cruelty and hate is expressed while doing so. In addition, the author states, “it should break your heart to kill”(Turner, 9). No matter the circumstances and the reason, one should not be able to kill and not feel anything hurting them inside. The loss of humanity is portrayed when these soldiers see absolutely no wrong in what they are doing. This causes them to find loss in themselves as well because they forget that the men being murdered have families and loved ones too.What is right and what needs to be done leads to a loss in  “Another Way to Die”. Through Haruki’s symbols, he expresses loss in war. “Down in the hole, the screeching of cicadas sounded very different from the way it sounded above ground”(Haruki, 9). The hole is brought up multiple times throughout the story. It symbolizes the loss of the innocent lives and their voices not being heard. It also symbolizes the ongoing cycle of death in war and in general how it can not be stopped. Also, cicadas symbolize the victims and how they are never heard the same because people never look at the situations from the other perspective. This shows loss of their voices. Cicadas come back every seven years so it is like a cycle and will keep repeating. In the same way, the author symbolizes another type of species to represent loss again. “The elephants had not been killed”(Haruki, 2) This quote is significant to loss because although the other animals died, the elephant stayed alive. The elephants never forget so this means that the victims and soldiers will never forget what they are going through during war. This will also cause a loss in themselves because it will overpower how they were before they experienced war. Both relate and connect because of loss in war.
